10f. Loose bits and pieces

Apart from the names of Seulings that we, as yet, have not been able to connect, we also have pictures with family members from the Busecker Tal, that we could not identify. Someday they hopefully will assume their rightful place in the family book.

“Es ist geschafft.” Having finished the work, it is easy to laugh (1965). Lina Vogel-Lepper and her husband Wilhelm, with little Andrea Seuling and her Tante Marie Vogel-Lepper. We once again do not know which Andrea this is.

On this picture from 1911, renter Wilhelm Seuling poses in the first floor window of the house “Kimmels” at Grüner Rasen 8. Jacob Rau (born 1872) stands in the window facing the street, his spouse Margarethe Vogel (1872) at the garden side. On the street are, from the left, Willi Rau (1907; killed in action 1943 in Russia), his sisters Therese (1899-1915) and Margarethe married Koch (1908).

Celebrating the Tauffeier of the Meyer/Wagenbach family, Schulstraße 2, in 1920 are, top row from the left, Katharine Wagenbach-Seuling (*1886), Heinrich Wagenbach sen. (*1887), Ludwig Meyer (*1885), Heinrich Meyer (Dirigent from Wieseck, 1889), Elise Hofmann-Wagenbach (later Faudringen, 1897) and Minna Meyer (Wieseck). In the middle row one recognizes Katharine Becker, Heinrich Wagenbach jun. (1911), Margarete Meyer-Wagenbach (*1884), midwife Christine Hofmann-Bötz (*1861) with the newly born son of Heinrich Meyer, Elise Wagenbach-Wagner, Margarete Meyer (*1911 in Daubringen, a cousin of Elise Wagenbach-Wagner). In the bottom row are Ludwig Meyer (*1910, killed in action) and Margarete Meyer from Langen.

Around 1910 the stage coach departing from Großen-Busecker Straße 17 provided a daily “one HP” transportation service for mail and people between Gießen and Alten-Buseck. Coachman is Wilhelm Schwalb, who could be a family member.

Fünfhausen 23 in Beuern. In the windows one recognizes the couple Heinrich and Kristine Kumpf-Hahn. On the street are, from the left, Caspar Kumpf II, youngest son Wilhelm and daughter Maria married Seuling.

Finally, the Internet provided us with two of the most remarkable and as yet untraceable photographs of potential family members. The first was through the image of “la Seuling” on a web site named Miami Music Video Production: Jairo Fuentes, on set production pictures. Perhaps, in the course of our further studies, we will also be able to solve this additional mystery.

“Seuling is dreaming of Jairo…” Source: Internet, 1998.

The second is a glorious photograph of the Seuling family grave in a Frankfurt cemetery. No further details are known on the siblings(?) Moritz (1883-1933) and Anna (1886-1961).

Amsterdam Seulings in the 1700s?

(work in progress)

The Amsterdam archives produced a group of Seulings (with a greta number of misspellings of the name) that as yet can not be retraced to the Alten-Buseck nor Zettmannsdorf roots. Quite probably they are descendants of an as yet unknown Seuling tribe. The wedding registrations of the oldest members Jan Hendrik and his brother(?) Joost Hendrik Seuling indicate they originate from Osnabrück and Mellen. Mellen is a village in the Sauerland in the state Nordrhein-Westfalen.

The family crest

Similar to all other self-respecting families the Dutch Suijling branch has a family crest, the origin and meaning of which currently escapes us. According to researcher Hanno de Iongh, who also studied this sensitive subject, some prudence appears advisable. It is not entirely inconceivable that the crest is the product of well intended but heraldically not fully responsible art work. Still, it is a thing of obvious beauty.

True to form, the collection of family crests is not limited to a single one. With numerous commercial enterprises active in the field, the number of viable proposals rapidly increases. We are the lucky recipients of a beautiful family crest, with accompanying certificate explaining some possible backgrounds of the family name put together by The Historical Research Center, that one of our distant cousins from Bamberg picked up in the United States. The research done for this purpose is not very deep. Still it is interesting to note that the certificate refers to Johannes Andreas Seuling who as early as 1767 is found in the archives of Philadelphia. Moreover, the text refers to a Conrad Seuling who, as a 25-year old farmer from Baden (probably: Badenburg), traveled aboard the ship Leila from Rotterdam to New York where it arrived in July 1850.
